EXIT – A Visual Reflection on Auschwitz

EXIT – A Visual Reflection on Auschwitz
A personal photo project on memory, responsibility, and confronting the past.
This visual essay was created during a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial. What began as a historical learning moment with my son became a deeply emotional encounter with questions of remembrance, shame, and ethical responsibility.
The book combines atmospheric photographs with concise, reflective text and a central poem. Rather than aiming for documentary completeness, it explores the tension between personal experience and collective memory.
EXIT – the final image and the book’s title – stands for more than leaving a historical site. It symbolizes a conscious decision: to walk away from indifference and toward empathy, remembrance, and action.
