The power of words: How technology and language influence us

In recent years, it has become clear how easy it is to influence people despite technological advances. As an enthusiastic believer in innovation and technology, I find it fascinating and at the same time worrying to observe the effects on our society.

Invisible threads of marketing

Loyalty programs such as cashback systems are an everyday example of how our behavior is subtly guided by technology and language. They attract us to the same stores over and over again — an invisible network that shapes our consumer behavior. These mechanisms encourage thinking about the manipulative power of technology.

Language as a tool of influence

One personal experience made me think in particular: the change in our language. Terms such as “axis of evil” or “war of aggression” influence our perception and create a certain framing. As a child of the post-war generation, I experienced how dogmas about enemies and dangers were questioned and overcome. At the same time, I am proud of achievements such as Wikipedia, which once stood for free and limitless access to knowledge.

AI manipulation threats

Over time, these ideals were also jeopardized by misuse. Wikipedia, for example, had to introduce strict quality assurance measures. A similar problem could arise with generally available AI models. What happens when political actors or small but influential groups distort the results of these models through targeted input? The risk of users being directed indirectly is real.

A glimpse into the future

How will our children deal with these challenges? Will they grow up in a world where walls are drawn between information and manipulation, or in one that focuses on openness and critical thinking?

Responsibility and ethics

The power of language and technology should inspire us to uphold ethical principles and question manipulative structures. This is the only way we can create a world in which innovations serve humanity and not control it. ‍
